The Storm in the Barn (Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction)

The Storm in the Barn (Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction)

By Matt Phelan

It's a graphic novel, like a comic book. The story is about a boy named Jack Clark who's family lives in a town where he encounters bullies, dust bowls, no helping his father, and no rain at all. One day Jack wanders into the abandoned Talbot farm and finds a man that's face looked like rain. Soon he figures out that was the rain in a different form and Jack wanted to bring the rain back. So he faced the rain, then took the tote bag that brought rain but he got caught by the rain and soon they both started to tug it. But then the bag ripped and then the sky started to crackle and boom! The rain fell from the sky again and his father lets Jack help bring back the crops.

The Cloud Chamber

The Cloud Chamber

By Joyce Maynard

Have you ever not had a dad for awhile? Well Nate didn’t for a long time in his life. In the book The Cloud Chamber by Joyce Maynard, . Nate and his a younger sister didn’t have a dad for a long period time. The story takes place in modern time on a farm and in a hospital. The turning point is when Nate and his sister came home on the bus that day the couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw their dad being dragged away by the police with blood pouring down his face, and was raised into the ambulance on a stretcher, and was drove away. One conflict is that now Nate and his sister have no clue what is going on and all they know that their dad is gone. Another is that now the mother is worried because now the dad isn’t there to help out on the farm. The protagonist is Nate and the antagonist is his dad. Will Nate ever get his dad back or will he never see him again? I recommend this book for people who are interested and enjoy a sadder story, I also recommend it to middle school kids and above.

Anacaona: Golden Flower, Haiti, 1490

By Edwidge Danticat

I read this for a mother-daughter book club, and I really liked it. It was really interesting and very well written. It is about a girl in Haiti at the time that Cristapher Columbus arrived at North America. Anacaona's uncle is the leader of the area she lives in.
