Meet Caroline: An American Girl

Meet Caroline: An American Girl

By Kathleen Ernst

Zebra3

My favorite part of the book is when the British come to their boat. They were coming to board their ship. They were coming in longboats. Flying an American flag.

The Giant-Slayer

The Giant-Slayer

By Iain Lawrence

This is my favourite book! The story takes you from a world of Laurie into Jimmy the Giant Slayer's dimension. Laurie is a girl whose one and only friend has polio. As she visits Dickie-her friend- she begins to tell the story of Colloso. I love the way that her story changes the world around her. The patients at Bishop's hospital in the polio ward step away from their original lives and take the character that is them. Laurie's story gets so intense, that her life depends on it. This is definitely a must read book for everyone.

By Lynne Reid Banks

This is a good book, but very gory at the arena part. I would not recommend this book to anyone younger than 11 years old.

Our Only May Amelia (Newbery Honor Book, 2000)

Our Only May Amelia (Newbery Honor Book, 2000)

By Jennifer L. Holm

I chose this book for the class because we have been learning about Washington State's history and the effects of change on people and cultures. May Amelia's family are immigrants from Finland and they have brought their cultural perspective to their new life in the Northwest. They must make adjustments to live successfully in this new territory among the indigenous Chinook and the immigrant Chinese to name a few. May Amelia, herself, wrestles with the traditions of her culture and her desire to take risks and live the adventurous life of her brothers. I loved the characters in this book and the unique writing writing style of Jennifer Holm.

This book is the bomb! I think that everyone with a family member or wants to go into the military should read this book. Frances O'Roark Dowell is a great author. I want to read other books by him.

Lincoln's Last Days: The Shocking Assassination That Changed America Forever

Lincoln's Last Days: The Shocking Assassination That Changed America Forever

By Bill O'Reilly, Dwight Jon Zimmerman

This is an awesome book and it is about an awesome time.It is about how Lincoln got assassinated and his last days. It has lots of cool photos including one of the pillow on which he died on! That picture was a little bit gruesome. You get to go behind the plot of James Booth and see how he did it. It made me understand Abraham Lincoln's death a lot more.

The Silent Boy

The Silent Boy

By Lois Lowry

The Silent Boy tells the story of Jacob from Katherine’s point of view. The background of the story threw way back to 1908 to 1911 before World War 1. Jacob was a “touched” boy, which means he had problems on mental health and couldn’t talk. Katherine, extremely different from Jacob, was a doctor’s daughter who was only in second grade. I personally think this book is deep in its meaning but not within the use of words. Living in a distinct way, Jacob barely spoke and was trying to hide himself. Throughout the words, I could feel the growth of the friendship between Jacob and Katherine. Even though he never talked or looked at her, she understood Jacob through observing and feeling. I like this book, but I personally think the author wrote the story too exquisitely if Katherine was the speaker.

Lucky Strikes

Lucky Strikes

By Louis Bayard

I really enjoyed this one! It wasn't exactly what I was anticipating but it was still good in it's own right. I would definitely classify it more as a Middle Grade novel than an Young Adult one, but I still thoroughly enjoyed my reading of it. I was put off a bit by some of the phrasing of things and the fact that this was basically one long letter but I wasn't sure who it was addressed to or if I was supposed to be someone in Melia's life. I thought that there was a good mix of believable good things that came out of this and some things that were almost too good to be true. And while it works in some novels, I found that this one could have used with more of the down and out sort of feeling rather than the happily ever afters. There were definitely some things that went wrong, but it felt like it went up and up and the real issues that could have set them back didn't really do so. And I feel like that made me feel a bit cheated for the story. I did really like all the characters though. I thought Melia was really strong and tough and while she sounded older than 14, I could believe it through context and timing. I feel as though with historical fiction, you can get away with how your MC sounds and acts because of context and this was definitely one of those instances. I think she was really brave and did anything and everything she could to survive and keep her family together. I liked that she was really innovative but also still a child and allowed to be a child in this story. I think the family was really well constructed. I liked that everyone had their role but they were also really dependent on one another. I think there was a lot of pressure for Melia to be the leader but she defected when she had to because it was the right thing to do. I really liked this one. I thought it felt like the time period, had a really strong main character, and enough hope to mix with the sad parts that I found myself smiling as much as I did crying. Overall a well rounded novel with a great message that no matter what life throws at you, you are stronger than it.
