This movie is about a 10-year-old named August, and he was born with a facial deformity. He has been home-schooled by his mother, but now both of his parents think he is ready to start 5th grade. He meets three 5th graders at first, Jack Will, Julian, and Charlotte. Those three kids show Auggie around the school, and we learn that Julian isn't the nicest of kids. August and Jack Will become friends very quickly, and Jack Will is the only person right now that August is friends with, or doesn't make fun of him. Olivia, who is Auggie's sister, has known for most of her life that having a brother with a facial deformity isn't easy. She learns that she isn't the center of attention, or her parents aren't ever worried about her because they are focusing on August. Olivia has a friend named Miranda, who pretended during her summer camp that she was in Olivia's shoes, and she had August as a brother. August quickly realizes that going to school isn't easy and that people might not be who you think they are. This movie shows the reality of someone being born with a facial deformity isn't easy, and the challenges people have to face when they are against that obstacle. I enjoyed this movie very much, as it was very eye-opening as to what someone has to go through when they weren't lucky with their birth. It shows that everyone's life is different and that everyone might be going through something. This movie was very heartfelt and it was a tear jerker. I definitely recommend this movie to kids 9+, but it might be different based on what the parents think is appropriate, as there are scenes that contain drinking and underage drinking, but these scenes are very short and are not glorified. I think this is a very good movie to show to kids that might need to be taught that what you say or do hurts someone's feelings, and that life isn't easy for everyone and the struggles they might go through.
