On July 29th 1914, the world’s peace was shattered as the artillery of the Austria-Hungary Empire began shelling the troops of the country to its south. What followed was like a row of falling dominoes as one European country after another rushed into war. Soon most of Europe was fighting in this calamitous war that could have been avoided. This was, of course, the First World War.
But who could have guessed that on December 25 the troops would openly defy their commanding officers by stopping the fighting and having a spontaneous celebration of Christmas with their "enemies"?

The non-fiction book Truce, by Jim Murphy, recounts how the soldiers stopped fighting on Christmas day in order to celebrate the holiday, and even exchanged gifts with each other in no man’s land between the trench lines. What led up to the truce? How did it start? Why did the peace stop? Truce is an excellent choice for anyone who loves history or wants to know more about the first world war. This book captivates you in its unique and interesting story. An informative retelling of a brief peace in the midst of war, Truce, includes: maps, photographs, quotes from real-life soldiers’ letters and journals, and examples of war propaganda. This special book shows that the soldiers were normal people and they didn’t want to fight each other. The Christmas Truce, an amazing historical event, had never happened before and will unfortunately not happen again. Although this book contains much information, it is much easier to read than a textbook. I enjoyed Truce and give it 5 stars.
