You just can't keep a good girl down . . . unless you use the proper methods.
Piper McCloud can fly. Just like that. Easy as pie.
Sure, she hasn't mastered reverse propulsion and her turns are kind of sloppy, but she's real good at loop-the-loops.
Problem is, the good folk of Lowland County are afraid of Piper. And her ma's at her wit's end. So it seems only fitting that she leave her parents' farm to attend a top-secret, maximum-security school for kids with exceptional abilities.
School is great at first with a bunch of new friends whose skills range from super-strength to super-genius. (Plus all the homemade apple pie she can eat!) But Piper is special, even among the special. And there are consequences.
Consequences too dire to talk about. Too crazy to consider. And too dangerous to ignore.
At turns exhilarating and terrifying, Victoria Forester's debut novel has been praised by Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight saga, as "the oddest/sweetest mix of Little House on the Prairie and X-Men...Prepare to have your heart warmed." The Girl Who Could Fly is an unforgettable story of defiance and courage about an irrepressible heroine who can, who will, who must . . . fly.
This title has Common Core connections.
Praise for Victoria Forester and The Girl Who Could Fly:
"It's the oddest/sweetest mix of Little House on the Prairie and X-Men. I was smiling the whole time (except for the part where I cried). I gave it to my mom, and I'm reading it to my kids―it's absolutely multigenerational. Prepare to have your heart warmed." Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight saga
"In this terrific debut novel, readers meet Piper McCloud, the late-in-life daughter of farmers...The story soars, just like Piper, with enough loop-de-loops to keep kids uncertain about what will come next....Best of all are the book's strong, lightly wrapped messages about friendship and authenticity and the difference between doing well and doing good."--Booklist, Starred Review
"Forester's disparate settings (down-home farm and futuristic ice-bunker institute) are unified by the rock-solid point of view and unpretentious diction… any child who has felt different will take strength from Piper's fight to be herself against the tide of family, church, and society."--The Horn Book Review
The Girl Who Could Fly is a 2009 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

This book is amazing! To me, it was a smaller and unique version of X-Men. It has great description and I guarantee you'll love the book no matter what age you are.
This book is fantastic! It's not a copy of all the other books you've read, it has a unique and interesting plot. It shows that people don't like change or difference. However, it also shows that being different is an advantage. This novel has a good message, a good story, and is extremely well written. I recommend this book to people of all ages.
Piper McCloud has been able to fly since she was a baby. It was simply part of her nature. However, her parents tell her not to because it is unnatural. When she disobeys them in a desperate attempt to make friends, she is discriminated against and attracts the attention of a secret government facility. She agrees to leave with them to be trained with other exceptional children, but she soon realizes that they are trying to take away their powers, not train them. With the help of the other children, she tries to and fails. I do not think this book is for children. I read it a year or two ago and it gave me nightmares. There are mentions of abuse, enough torture to cripple someone and curse words. It has suspense that pulls you in but ultimately some of the topics mentioned need a more mature outlook. I would recommend this book to someone in high school, no younger.
I read it (and enjoyed it!) in 3rd grade, so I don't get why you recommend this book for someone in high school and above. I personally would recommend this book to kids who are advanced readers in elementary school to adults. Anyway, I enjoyed your summary!
Piper is a special girl with a special power, she can fly. Because of her power, she was homeschooled and her parents kept her away from other children and public events. One day, someone comes to fetch Piper and take her to a school filled with special people like her. Her parents and herself think its a great opportunity. She has a great experience in the school, but then discovers, the school isn't trying to help them, it's trying to destroy them. With the help of her friend, she escapes the alleged school and is freed.
This book was very interesting to read, however for me personally, it was not one I would like to own. In it, a girl discovers that ever since she was little she was able to fly. After media invades her small home town, her parents send her to a school for "special" children. There she meets her new friends, people who are like her, that don't fit in. But once they discover that the school has some deeper, darker secrets, they try to plan an escape. The downsides are that this book has many dull parts that are hard to read through, and it also uses a high amount of country talk and spelling which, I personally, am not fond of. However, i completely understand that that is a personal opinion. I would not recommend this book but there are surely people who would disagree.
This is a lovely story about a girl who faces the world and is expected to be someone she's not. Piper McCloud is extraordinary and makes extraordinary friends. I love the plot and the characters. My only wish is that there had been a few more chapters at the end of the book to really sum up this wonderful adventure.
Its about a girl who could fly (title gives it away) she ends up going to a special school for kids like her. Some of the students there is Daisy and Violet. This book is a very good fiction novel with lots of plots and twists.
