When Sheldon Russell Curtis told this story to his daughter, Rosa, she kept every word in her heart and was to retell it many times.
I will tell it in Sheldon's own words as nearly as I can.

He was wounded in a fierce battle and left for dead in a pasture somewhere in Georgia when Pinkus found him. Pinkus' skin was the color of polished mahogany, and he was flying Union colors like the wounded boy, and he picked him up out of the field and brought him to where the black soldier's mother, Moe Moe Bay, lived. She had soft, gentle hands and cared for him and her Pink.

But the two boys were putting her in danger, two Union soldiers in Confederate territory! They had to get back to their outfits. Scared and uncertain, the boys were faced with a hard decision, and then marauding Confederate troops rode in.

In this Civil War story passed from great-grandfather to grandmother, to son, and finally to the author-artist herself, Patricia Polacco once again celebrates the shared humanity of the peoples of this world.

My reaction to this book was sad because of what happens in the end. I would recommend this book to 4th and 5th graders. It showed how the South and North hated each other at the time.

Saddest book ever. This is how sad it is-I don't even have a favorite character and, people in my class were crying

OH My gosh!! that was really sad. Pinkus Aylee-dark skinned and Sheldon Curtis-light skinned. Moe Moe Bay told them to hide during the civil war, and it was not too late to find out she is gone, dead, out of the world. Pink and Say get pulled apart and start crying, and the people that pulled them apart are-happy. " I just want to touch the hand of Abraham Lincoln once more" Pink touched Abraham Lincoln, and Say touched Pink. I kind of touched Abraham Lincoln, since I touched the book

This was an amazing and sad book. At the end I found out that the author was related to pink. They became friends and they got sent away in different directions. They wanted to touch hands one more time because one touched abraham lincoln. Really good story.

If you like a sad story, this is the one to read. There is joy but sadness. There are many qualities about this book. One is that this is a very touching book. It'll have you sobbing. This is a true story . Make sure to honor Pinkus Aleey. This is a wonderful book.
