On February 10, Ramon Paje, the Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the Philippines, announced the discovery of 400 "new" islands within the borders of the world's second largest archipelago.
The land masses were discovered by the country's National Mapping and Resource Agency (NAMRIA) using a gadget called the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar. The officials say the new islands, most of which are located near Mindanao, the second largest and southernmost major island in the Philippines, were previously believed to be one big land mass.
But don't expect to visit the new islands anytime soon. That's because though the sovereign island nation now has a total of 7,500 islands, only 2,000 are inhabited. In fact, most have not even been named!
