Saturday, May 7 will be like Christmas for comic book lovers. That's because, on that day, they will be able to walk into any one of the 2,300 participating vendors worldwide, and take home a comic book (or two) for free!
Now celebrating its 15th year, Free Comic Book Day is the brainchild of comic book publishers, retailers, and distributors. The annual event that takes place on the first Saturday of May was established in 2002 to re-ignite interest in graphic novels and also encourage customers both young and old, to visit their local comic book retailer. Over six million comic books are handed out to fans each year, and the numbers are only increasing.
Of course, not every comic book in the store is free. However, with 50 titles to choose from, fans usually have little to complain about, especially since publishers go all out to create special editions that are only available on this day.
This year, Marvel Comics plans to release two special comics — "Civil War II" sets the stage for Iron Man and his supporters against Captain Marvel and her allies. Captain America Volume 1 re-introduces Steve Rogers, who had been previously replaced in the comic book by Sam Wilson, as the superhero.
DC Comics, North America's second biggest comic publisher, also has some special treats in store. "Suicide Squad," will star Harley Quinn and Deadshot, the characters from the namesake movie that is scheduled for release on August 5. Those looking for female superheroes can grab a copy of "DC Super Hero Girls: Final Crisis." It features famous heroes and villains such as Batgirl, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Poison Ivy, and Cheetah as high school students.
There are also comic books featuring Sonic the Hedgehog, Strawberry Shortcake, Pink Panther, Archie and even the world's most favorite feline — Grumpy Cat. Television fans of popular shows like Doctor Who and The Simpsons can select comic books starring their favorite characters.
Additionally, though vendors may not give all their merchandise for free, they will discount it substantially on this fun "holiday." Hence, a visit to the store is well worth the effort for comic book fans.
